I grew up
Watching American cartoons
Playing Japanese videogames
Reading English novels
French fairy tales
And Belgian comics
Learning European history
And ancient Egyptian myths
Befriending Haitians, Italians,
Algerians, Moroccans, Tunisians
Romanians, Chinese and Vietnamese

And you ask me
What I think of Quebec?
:iconangrymiro:
I've had this text on my mind for about a year, but it took me all this time to finally write it down.

This is pretty much what occurs in my head when someone asks me what I think of Quebec or how my province's culture has affected me. I feel like my country's culture is devoid of any interest, even though I was born in it. I grew up loving so many different things I never really understood what people thought was great about Quebec. It's not always easy to feel like an outsider in your own country. It's hard to understand what your country is about when people don't even know if it's a country or not...

actually, that's what I like here.

I can go around the world just by strolling down one street
I can taste fine cuisine from India, Morocco and Paris without having to pay 800$ for a plane ticket.
I can experience different cultures, meet different people, all in the same province / city.

Quebec is a place where *everyone* is an outsider. Built by outsiders, invaded by outsiders, rebuilt by outsiders, maintained by outsiders. Like a big family of outsiders, I love it.

This is also what I like about it. I like my province, my city and (most of) the people who live there, yet I can't understand people who try to "defend" Quebec's culture. I don't like the cultural direction of Quebec, always banging its head against a wall trying to figure out whether it's a country or a province or just imitating what's been done in the USA or in other countries. Some things like Saint-Jean Baptiste just don't make any sense to me.

But it is an awesome place and I have no intention of moving away from it. I just wish people would realize how much of a melting pot Quebec is and leave the "terroir novels" and pseudo-official christian ancestry where it belongs : in the past.

I'll basically summarize it really quick : I just hate how most people say "I'm so proud to be from Quebec!" while having no idea of what they're proud of.
